The Abacab album was Genesis' first studio album to be self-produced and was their first collaboration with engineer Hugh Padgham (whom worked with former Genesis frontman Peter Gabriel and fellow rockers The Police by this point) whom singer/drummer Phil Collins had successfully collaborated with on his US Top 10 Multi-Platinum solo debut entitled Face Value/5().

Abacab, Genesis' third outing as a trio, not only features a blast from the Earth, Wind and Fire brass section (which was largely responsible for the R&B overtones of Face Value) in "No Reply at All," but most of the album quakes with a radically stripped-down sound, traceable to the thoroughly modern mood of Collins' record and his deep-echo ricochet drum technique.

Abacab is the eleventh studio album by English rock band Genesis, released on 18 September by Charisma Records. After their tour in support of their previous album, Duke (), the band took a break before they reconvened in to write and record a new album.
